Uisce Éireann is pleased to announce the commencement of an upgrade to the wastewater collection and stormwater treatment system in Baile na nGall, situated within Gaeltacht na nDéise, County Waterford.

The project will include upgrades to the existing pumping station at An Mota, the construction of two additional pumping stations, 3km of new sewers and additional storm water storage to reduce the frequency of Storm Water Overflows (SWOs) into the bay.

The upgrade works will bring significant benefits to the local community and ensure environmental compliance with national and EU wastewater regulations. Once completed, it will also improve water quality in Dungarvan Bay, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and protect the aquatic habitat of oysters and other shellfish within this designated shellfish water.

Commenting on the benefits of the project, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, Colm Claffey said “The new and enhanced infrastructure will ensure that wastewater in Baile na nGall is treated in accordance with the highest environmental standards prior to its safe discharge into the marine environment.”

“This initiative will contribute to the economic and social development of the communities in this picturesque region of Waterford. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the community for their patience and support during the delivery of this vital project.”

Jason Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Waterford City and County Council, welcomed the commencement by saying “It's great to see this project get underway. Protecting our environment has never been more important than it is today. With this upgrade, we are taking a major step in the right direction with regard to improving our environment especially in this Special Area of Conservation.”

The project is being carried out by David Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann. This project is expected to be complete in the Autumn of 2026.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for the delivery of all public water and wastewater services in Ireland. We are committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies.
