Renewable Energy Project at Newcastle West Wastewater Treatment Plant

Renewable Energy Project

We have installed solar panels in Newcastle West to reduce carbon emissions by over 11 tonnes per year.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Limerick City and County Council, has recently completed a renewable energy project at the Newcastle West Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project involved the installation of 112 ground-mounted solar panels at the facility, generating clean, renewable energy for the plant. This project will generate 26,500 kWh (kilowatt hours) electricity per year, improve energy efficiency at the plant and reduce carbon emissions.

This project is one of two Uisce Éireann sites selected as part of an sustainable energy pilot programme, with Uisce Éireann committed to increasing our energy efficiency to 33% by 2021.

Saliis Limited was commissioned to deliver this project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with the works completed in June 2019.

Benefits

  • Reduce the plant's carbon footprint, which will equate to an 11.5 tonnes reduction in carbon emissions
  • Generate 26,500 kWh (kilowatt hours) per year of electricity, which will lead to a significant reduction in the demand for imported electricity at the site
  • Boost the resilience of the plant by ensuring a continuous supply of energy in the case of power outages
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency at the plant

Steps

  • Constructed the 180 square metres solar array in the northern part of the wastewater treatment plant, with this location selected to optimise the production of electricity
  • Installation of 112 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels to generate clean, renewable electricity for the plant
  • All construction works were undertaken within the boundary of the site to minimise disruptions to residents of the surrounding area
