Malahide and Swords Water Supply Network Upgrade

Uisce Éireann has completed essential works to upgrade the water mains in Malahide and Swords. These works have secured the water supply for local businesses and residents into the future.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Fingal County Council, has completed upgrade works to the Malahide Water Supply Scheme. This forms part of a €21.7 million investment in the Howth, Malahide and Balbriggan Water Supply Schemes. John Craddock Limited delivered these significant works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

These works have increased the capacity of the water main system to meet current and future water supply demands in Howth, Malahide and Balbriggan by upgrading over 14km of water mains. The upgrade works carried out as part of this project will safeguard the water supply to this area, reduce interruptions to the drinking water supply and improve water pressure for homes and businesses.

What was involved?

The Malahide Water Supply Scheme serves a population of approximately 20,000 and is supplied by the Leixlip Water Treatment Plant. The existing water mains between Swords and the Seamount Reservoir in Malahide were operating beyond capacity, resulting in interruptions to supply. This project has upgraded the water mains to achieve adequate capacity to meet the Malahide Water Supply Scheme demands.

This project included the construction of approximately 2.5km of water mains between Swords and the existing Malahide Reservoir at Seamount.

The upgrade works carried out as part of this project have:

  • Improve the security of the drinking water supply to householders and businesses in Malahide, Howth, Balbriggan and the surrounding areas
  • Safeguard the water supply to this area
  • Reduce interruptions to the drinking water supply
  • Improve water pressure for homes and businesses.
