Kilfenora Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade
Uisce Éireann is progressing plans to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure in Kilfenora and a contractor has now been appointed.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Clare County Council, is progressing plans to upgrade the Kilfenora Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). EPS has been appointed as the contractor to deliver the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The current EPA Certificate of Authorisation requires that the direct discharge of treated effluent from the existing WWTP to receiving groundwaters, cease immediately. When completed, the new infrastructure will result in greatly improved wastewater discharge standards, ensuring compliance with EPA wastewater regulation requirements and in doing so, protecting the receiving waters.
What is involved in this project?
The proposed works at the existing WWTP site include:
- Decommissioning and demolition of the existing WWTP,
- Retaining the administration building and storm tank, construction of a new WWTP with a capacity of 330 PE, including tertiary filtration and UV disinfection, as well as additional storm water storage within the site, and
- Treated effluent shall be conveyed via a new lift pumping station and sewer to discharge directly to a new sand filter percolation area.
What are the benefits of this project?
The completed works will ensure:
- Provision of a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Kilfenora,
- Provision of sufficient capacity to facilitate future population growth,
- Compliance with the EPA wastewater regulations,
- Protection of receiving groundwaters at Ballybreen Swallow Hole,
- Protection of wildlife in the surrounding SPA / SAC / NHA.
