Dunmanway Water Mains Replacement
National Leakage Reduction Programme
Uisce Éireann in partnership with Cork County Council is replacing problematic water mains in Darkwood, Dunmanyway Co. Cork to provide a more reliable water supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality.
The works involve the replacement of approximately 1600 metres of problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Dunmanway will commence in the end of November. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The section of works will take place along the Dunmanway road (L4609) from the Inch road junction to the Darkwood Crossroads before continuing approximately 350 metres eastbound along the (L8558) towards Derrynasafagh.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Ltd. and are expected to be completed by mid-January 2022.
What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of these leakage reduction works include:
- Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages ensuring a more reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Water Quality - Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes will reduce the risk of contamination.
Traffic Management and road closures
In order to complete the works in an efficient and safe manner, a section of the L8558 road will remain closed from the Darkwood Crossroads approximately 350 metres eastbound toward Derrynasafagh from late November finishing before December.
The suggested diversion is to travel northwest from the Darkwood Crossroads along the L4609 to the junction for Derrynafasagh before continuing southbound to the L8558 road.
A second road closure will take place from late-November to Mid-January along the L4609 road from the Inch Road junction as far as the Darkwood Crossroads.
The suggested diversion route is to travel southeast from the Darkwood Crossroads continuing on the Cat Lane/Mary Road (L4617) to Market Square (R586) before heading westbound along Castle Street road (L4609).
Will customers be affected by the works?
The works may involve some short-term water outages and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water outages.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
