Crohane Water Mains Replacement
National Leakage Reduction Programme
Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Kerry County Council, has replaced problematic water mains in Crohane, Co. Kerry to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
The works involved the replacement of over 1km of problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Crohane, Co. Kerry commenced in late September. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The section of works took place from the Dromkerry crossroads (of the L11012 and the R563), along the road to Gortacollopa, and ended at the crossroads exiting onto the N72.
The works also involved laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customers' water supply.
The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward & Burke Construction and were completed by November.
What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:
- A Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance - These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work were limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. To deliver the works safely and efficiently, temporary traffic lights were in place along the R563, at Dromkerry, and continued onto the N72, just after the Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company.
For the works along the L11012 a road closure was in place from Monday 18th September - Friday 6th October 2023 inclusive. The road was closed from the Dromkerry crossroads (of the L11012 and the R563), along the road to Gortacollopa, and ended at the crossroads exiting onto the N72. Local diversions were in place during this time along the N72 and along the R563.
Local and emergency traffic were always maintained for duration of overall project.
The works involved some short-term water interruptions and the project team ensured that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
