Coolatee Sewerage Scheme

Wastewater Project

Uisce Éireann has completed construction on the new wastewater treatment plant and associated infrastructure for Coolatee.

The completed Coolatee Sewerage Scheme, backed by an investment of circa €3 million, includes a cutting-edge Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) Wastewater Treatment Plant. This facility will eliminate the discharge of raw sewage into the Foyle and Deele Rivers and is fully compliant with EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives and the Certificate of Authorisation.

Constructed wetlands are eco-friendly systems that mimic natural wetlands, treating wastewater from small, rural communities before safely returning it to the water system. As one of the first ICW projects commissioned by Uisce Éireann, Coolatee will serve as a model for similar projects nationwide. By eliminating untreated wastewater discharge, the scheme not only improves water quality but also supports social and economic development, paving the way for a brighter future in Donegal.

These works were delivered by Coffey Construction (I) Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
