Cloheen Water Mains Replacement

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork County Council, has replaced problematic water mains at Cloheen, Clonakilty, to improve security of supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality.

Uisce Éireann is investing over €500 million between 2017- 2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the public water network.

Benefits

The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:

  • Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • A Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance - These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

Steps

The works involve the replacement of 573 metres of the existing problematic trunk water main with high pressure ductile iron. The associated assets are also due to be replaced as part of the rehabilitation works.

The programme to replace the water main at Cloheen will commence on 4 January 2021. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, and are expected to be completed in late February.

The works will take place from Connor's Cross due west for approximately 573 metres. In order to safely and efficiently complete the project a road closure from Connor's Cross to Ballyduvane Cross South is required.

As the works involve the replacement of the existing trunk water main with a new section in the same trench, a separate 'overlander' temporary pipeline will be installed for the duration of the works to maintain water supply.

A road closure is required to complete the required works safely and efficiently and diversions will be in place for the duration of the works. Local access will be maintained.

Traffic travelling west towards from Clonakilty will be re-directed to the L-8053/N71 and the L-8051 Ballyduvane Road.

Traffic travelling from the Cloheen area due west will be directed to the L-4007-52 north to the N71. Traffic will take the N71 west to Ballyduvane Cross Roads and then take the L-8051-0 south.

Traffic due east toward Clonakilty will be re-directed to the N71 via the L-8051 Ballyduvane Road. All diversions will be signposted in advance.

Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water shut offs.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
