Abbeyleix Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Uisce Éireann has completed upgrade works at the Abbeyleix Water Treatment Plant in Co. Laois.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Laois County Council, has completed works to improve the quality of drinking water for Abbeyleix and the surrounding area. This investment will benefit over 1,800 customers and ensure the delivery of a clean, safe drinking water source for the area.
The water treatment processes at the plant were inadequate in protecting against the formation of Cryptosporidium. The completed upgrades have modernised and improved the water treatment process at the plant.
What was involved as part of this project?
As part of this project, Uisce Éireann upgraded the existing Abbeyleix water treatment plant, including:
- Installation of new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units
- Upgrade of the existing Chlorination system
What are the benefits of this programme?
The upgrade works carried out as part of this project will:
- Ensure the delivery of safe, clean drinking water to residents and businesses in Abbeyleix and the surrounding area
- Enable the removal of the Abbeyleix Public Water Supply from the EPA's Remedial Action List (RAL)
- Safeguard the water supply to this area
- Improve water quality and water treatment standards
