Crews restore water supply in Dunmanway, Co. Cork following Storm Bert
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.
Water supply is returning to normal for impacted customers in Dunmanway, Co. Cork and surrounding areas. Due to high turbidity in the raw water supply as a result of storm flooding, production at the Dunmanway Water Treatment Plant was shut down over the weekend. While production has now recommenced at the water treatment plant, the reservoirs levels are very low.
As the network refills and supplies return throughout the day, customers at various points of the network may experience intermittent disruption or low water. Properties on high ground may experience short delays in water supply being fully restored. Customers may also experience short-term discolouration to their supply. For more information, customers can visit the Discoloured water section of our website.
Alternative water supplies will remain in place today – Wednesday, 27 November, in the form of bulk tankers, which can be accessed on Kilbarry Road, adjacent to Dunmanway Recycling Centre.
Uisce Éireann’s Niall O’Riordan said “We acknowledge the inconvenience caused by interruptions to the water supply and very much appreciate the community’s co-operation while our crews worked to carry out the repairs and restore supply, which proved challenging and complex following Storm Bert.”
“We are appealing to customers to check for leaks in the home and carry out necessary leak repairs to prevent avoidable loss of water. We are also asking farmers to check their service pipes, drinking troughs and outbuildings asking the public for their support to help reduce overall demand by conserving water.”
Customers are urged to report loss of service or visible leaks to assist Uisce Éireann to identify bursts. The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on X @IWCare with any queries. Uisce Éireann is working to address supply interruptions to customers as a result of the impacts of Storm Bert on water treatment infrastructure in Cork. Our priority is the provision of clean safe drinking water to communities and the safety of water services staff who work to make that happen.
The Dunmanway Water Treatment Plant, which supplies drinking water to the communities in Dunmanway and surrounding areas, has been impacted due to poor raw water quality from storm flooding. The turbidity of the incoming water for treatment remains high. For this reason, the treatment plant has shutdown. Reservoirs in the area are now depleting meaning customers in these areas are likely to be impacted by an unplanned interruption to the water supply. Uisce Éireann is working to restore the water supply as quickly as possible to impacted customers.
Niall O Riordan, Operations Lead with Uisce Éireann said, “Customers in Dunmanway and surrounding areas will be impacted by reduced water pressure and water outages. We understand how disruptive unplanned outages are and we regret the inconvenience caused”.
As per best practice, most homes and businesses will have on-site water storage to provide a backup source of water for sanitation purposes. Following return of supply, it typically takes two to three hours for normal supply to fully be restored to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.
