Upgrades to improve water supply and reduce leakage in Fingal
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Fingal Council, has completed a number of watermain improvement projects in Fingal and is making significant progress on water supply projects in Howth, Malahide, Balbriggan and Swords.
As part of Uisce Éireann's Leakage Reduction project almost 3 kilometres of old watermains were replaced in Skerries to reduce leakage and provide the community with a more reliable supply of water and reduce the occurrence of supply interruptions.
Speaking about the replacement of the watermains in Skerries, Matt Thomson, Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann, said "These works formed part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to upgrade the water network in Fingal and were delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's Leakage Reduction Programme. Replacing old pipes will safeguard the water supply for homes that previously experienced interruption to their supply during peak demand periods."
In addition to the works in Skerries Uisce Éireann and Fingal County Council completed the connection of a new 6 kilometre water main, extending from Jordanstown to Balbriggan, to the network improving the security of supply for more than 24,000 customers in Balbriggan and surrounding areas. These works form part of a wider €22 million investment in the water supply for Swords, Howth, Malahide and Balbriggan to safeguard the water supply for those communities.
Speaking about these works, William McKnight, Uisce Éireann, said, "The essential works being delivered to improve the water supply in Howth, Malahide, Swords and Balbriggan are vital to ensure a safer and a more secure water supply to homes and businesses in the area and will also support the economic and social development in Fingal. The connection of the 6 kilometre Balbriggan watermain to the network marked a significant milestone in the delivery of this project and has resulted in a more secure supply to more than 24,000 customers."
Uisce Éireann continues to work at this time with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of both staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of critical drinking water and wastewater services. Uisce Éireann would like to remind people to follow the HSE Covid-19 advice and ensure frequent handwashing.
