Uisce Éireann progressing major upgrade to the water supply in Midleton
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
Uisce Éireann in partnership with Cork County Council is progressing with the construction of new wastewater infrastructure in Midleton to cater for the future growth and development of the wider Midleton area. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme. The project involves the construction of over 7km of new wastewater pipes and the construction of two new Wastewater Pumping Stations, which will provide the required wastewater infrastructure capacity to support future social and economic growth in the area.
To facilitate the safe delivery of the next phase of works, a 24-hour one-way northbound lane closure is required on the R626 Upper Mill Road, Midleton, Co. Cork, from a point immediately north of the Level Crossing to the Mill Road/Northern Relief Road traffic light Junction. The closure will be in place 24 hours a day from 8am Monday 28 October to 7pm Saturday 02 November 2024. Local and emergency access will always be maintained with northbound traffic diverted via Market Green, Knockgriffin, Northern Relief Road and onward to R626 Upper Mill Road. Access and egress to local businesses will also not be affected during the lane closure.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and work crews will make every effort to minimise disruption to the local community.
The development project has made significant progress, with the first three phases already completed. Phase 1 involved the construction of a 6km wastewater pipeline from the Nordic Business Park to Carrigtwohill. In Phase 2, a new wastewater pumping station was built at Water Rock. Phase 3 saw the completion of a gravity sewer from the Nordic Business Park to the Northern Relief Road roundabout, along with a rising main extending from the roundabout to the planned Midleton North pumping station. Currently, Phase 4 is in progress, focusing on the construction of a new wastewater pumping station and pipeline at Millbrook Crescent, near Mill Road (R626).
Programme Manager, for Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme, Lisa Cogan is looking forward to completing the next phase of works. “Completing this essential project will facilitate social and economic progress such as upcoming housing developments. This initiative underscores Uisce Éireann’s continued dedication to delivering vital infrastructure to foster growth in local communities throughout Cork.”
Lisa added, “On behalf of Uisce Éireann, I want to express our gratitude to the people of Midleton for their understanding and cooperation during the ongoing traffic management. Based on our past experiences, we believe that the short-term disruption will be outweighed by the long-term advantages.”
The overall works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Geda Construction and are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
