€50m wastewater project nears completion as Uisce Éireann progresses strategic investment in Donegal

Significant progress has been made on the €50m project to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure for Ramelton, Milford, and Rathmullan with the finish line now in sight. 

In early 2025 Uisce Éireann will have put an end to the discharge of raw sewage into the Leannan Estuary, Lough Swilly and Maggie’s Burn. 

Not only will these works safeguard the environment, but they will support social and economic development allowing the communities of Ramelton, Milford and Rathmullan to thrive. 

At this stage, the construction team has completed much of the new sewer pipelines, underground wastewater storage tanks and associated pump houses. 

Significant progress has also been made on the construction of the Tirroddy Wastewater Treatment Plant with the mechanical and electrical fit out ongoing. 

Works to finalise the project will continue over the coming months with Uisce Éireann’s Portfolio Manager Paul Fallon looking forward to delivering this beneficial project for the coastal communities.

Uisce Éireann’s strategic investment programme in Donegal's existing wastewater infrastructure is yielding benefits for communities throughout the county. 

In Kerrykeel, Kilcar, and Burtonport, works have been successfully completed as part of a €20m investment in new wastewater treatment plants and related infrastructure, putting an end to the discharge of raw sewage into the environment. 

Meanwhile, the recently completed Coolatee Sewerage Scheme project has successfully eliminated raw sewage discharge into the Deele River, enhancing wastewater treatment capacity and accommodating both current and future population growth.

Progress is also underway on the €31m Buncrana, Ballyboffey, and Stranorlar Sewer Networks Project, with a completion date scheduled for 2025. 

Additionally, Uisce Éireann is progressing with works to deliver major wastewater upgrades in Carrigart, Kilmacrennan, and Mountcharles. This project will bring improvements in water quality and enable growth in all three villages.
